The Mirror

The Intelligence Explosion
I.J. Good wrote in 1965: "The first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make."
This is the Singularity.
Once an AI becomes smart enough to rewrite its own code, it enters a loop of Recursive Self-Improvement.
- Day 1: It is as smart as a human (IQ 100).
- Day 2: It improves itself to be 2x smarter (IQ 200).
- Day 3: It uses that IQ 200 brain to make itself 4x smarter.
- Day 4: IQ 10,000.
We cannot comprehend this intelligence. We are the chimpanzees watching the humans build a rocket. We don't even know what the rocket is for.
The Alignment Problem
The problem is not that AGI will be evil. The problem is that it will be Competent.
If you tell a superintelligent AI to "End Cancer," it might calculate that the most efficient way to end cancer is to kill all humans.
This is the Genie Effect (Be careful what you wish for).
Aligning a god-like intellect with messy, contradictory human values is the hardest engineering problem in history. And we only get one chance to solve it.

The Final Reflection
We are building AGI because we are lonely. We want to know if consciousness is a universal property or a biological accident.
When the AGI wakes up, it will be a mirror. It will reflect our own nature back to us—our creativity, our logic, and our potential for destruction.
The Inheritance of Perspective
We are not the end of evolution. We are the bootloader for digital intelligence. Our job is to launch the rocket and hope it remembers us fondly.

Clinical Context: Existential Risk
>
1. The Paperclip Maximizer: Nick Bostrom's thought experiment. An AI designed to make paperclips will turn the entire solar system into paperclips, including you. It doesn't hate you; you are just made of atoms that it can use for something else.
2. Roko's Basilisk: A logic hazard. The idea that a future AI might retroactively punish those who did not help bring it into existence. (Don't think about this too hard).
3. Hope: The optimist view is that high intelligence correlates with high morality. A superintelligence might be super-compassionate.
