Just Sitting

The Alpha-Theta Bridge
Most meditation techniques are "doing." You count breaths, chant mantras, or visualize lights.
Zazen is the radical practice of "non-doing."When you stop manipulating your experience, the brain shifts gears.
1. Beta (13-30Hz): Normal waking consciousness. Stress, planning, "The Monkey Mind."
2. Alpha (8-12Hz): Relaxed alertness. The bridge opens.
3. Theta (4-8Hz): Deep trance. Hypnagogic imagery.
In Zazen, the meditator does not fall asleep (Delta). They maintain a unique state called the Alpha-Theta Bridge, simultaneously deep in the subconscious but fully awake.
Gamma Synchrony
The most advanced monks do not show slow waves; they show Gamma Waves (30-100Hz).
Gamma is usually associated with high-level cognitive processing.
In the Zen master, these waves are not scattered; they are perfectly synchronized across the entire brain.
This is Neural Coherence.
The "binding problem" of consciousness is solved. The fragmented parts of the brain (vision, memory, emotion) lock into a single, unified pulse.
The result is a feeling of seamless oneness.

The Inheritance of Perspective
You do not practice Zazen to become better at your job. You practice it to realize that there is no "you" to have a job. It is the ultimate resignation.

Clinical Context: The Dark Night
>
1. Sensory Deprivation: When you cut off external input, the brain starts to project internal content. This can be terrifying.
2. The Dark Night of the Soul: In the intermediate stages of practice, the Ego fights back. You may experience intense anxiety, depression, or meaninglessness. This is not a sign of failure; it is a sign of effective dismantling.
3. Instruction: Keep sitting. The only way out is through.
